The chapel on the rock

The chapel seen at the wedding is Agios Ioannis, near Glossa, on top of a 100-metre promontory.

106 steps cut into the rock lead to the top, and the beach of Agios Ioannis lies right beside it. Centuries ago the rock was a lookout for pirate attacks.

The chapel and hotel interiors were sets, built at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire.

Local tradition says a fisherman kept seeing a light on the cliff top, and an icon of St John the Forerunner hidden there kept returning to the spot. The saint’s feast is on 29 August.

Take the road from Skopelos Town towards Glossa and turn off where signed; 106 steps up the rock, a small beach below and a canteen nearby.

Vis played the Greek island of Kalokairi in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Filming took 24 days. The scene where everyone arriving on the island has to talk to a man at border control was filmed in the port of Vis.
