Mulholland Drive

A real road, a studio gate, a hot dog stand and a club made from two theatres. Follow the film down off the ridge.

The day side

Four places that look like themselves

Before the film turns strange, it stands in ordinary Los Angeles. Each of these has an address.

The door

One club, two buildings

Club Silencio is not on any map. Its entrance and its inside are two real theatres. Slide the door through.

Outside. The back of the Palace Theatre is the club’s entrance, on the Spring Street side.

Palace Theatre

BFI says the back of the Palace Theatre is the entrance to Club Silencio, and that nothing of the club is left to see today.

The fan list puts that entrance at the rear of the Palace, 640 South Spring Street.

Wikipedia says the Palace opened in 1911 as the third Los Angeles home of the Orpheum vaudeville circuit, and that vaudeville ran there until 1926. It stopped showing films in late 2000, was restored from 2010 and reopened as a live venue in June 2011, Wikipedia says.

Look from Broadway or walk round to Spring Street. It reopened as a live venue in 2011; go in for an event, not to find the club.

Nearby on Spring Street, the Banks Huntley Building stands in for the Ryan Entertainment offices. BFI says the Ryan Entertainment offices were in the Banks Huntley Building downtown, and that its back gate now carries a large mural.

Seven places, one night drive

Everything here is a public street, a shop front or a gate seen from the pavement. The club itself is gone; one theatre is a live venue and the other is a shop.
