Kelvin High School · walk over from Grosvenor

He walked over from his home on Grosvenor Avenue, when he went: attendance was not his strong suit, and he dropped out.

The school stands at the corner of Kingsway Avenue and Stafford Street, in Crescentwood. His friend Jack Harper went to Kelvin; the bassist Allan Bates says that is where Harper met Neil. He played Winnipeg folk clubs, where he first met Joni Mitchell.

Fort William · 1964 and 1965

That year Stephen Stills came through on a cross-Canada tour with a group called the Company, and the two met.

On 2 November 1964 the Squires, by then a trio, began two weeks at the Flamingo in Fort William; he wrote “Sugar Mountain” on that trip. In mid-April 1965 the band moved there, he said because it was halfway between Winnipeg and Toronto. They met again months later in Los Angeles, and Buffalo Springfield was born.

The clubs are not identified on any page we could check, so nothing is mapped. Pictured: the Sleeping Giant across the harbour from the city.

Sunset Boulevard · no address, so not mapped

In early April 1966 Richie Furay and Stephen Stills pulled up behind it in a Sunset Boulevard traffic jam: a battered black hearse with Ontario plates.

Ultimate Classic Rock tells the stop without naming the street; it says the Pontiac’s driveshaft later fell out on Sunset. The Rock Hall says plenty of bands started on the Sunset Strip, but none as literally as Buffalo Springfield.

It happened in traffic, not at an address, so nothing is mapped: walk the Strip from the Whisky.

Most of After the Gold Rush came from the Topanga sessions, in a tiny studio built in his basement.

Greg Reeves played bass and Ralph Molina drums; the teenage Nils Lofgren was asked to play piano, and Stephen Stills added a little harmony. His canyon neighbour Dean Stockwell wrote most of the unmade screenplay that inspired some of the songs. After the Gold Rush came out on 31 August 1970.

Massey Hall

On 19 January 1971 he played Massey Hall alone. It was a homecoming: he had left Canada in 1966.

He played new songs nobody had heard, among them “Old Man”, “The Needle and the Damage Done” and “Heart of Gold”. His producer David Briggs wanted the concert out before Harvest. Young wanted Harvest first, and later said he could see Briggs’s point. The tape came out on 13 March 2007 as Live at Massey Hall 1971. Repair work in the hall’s revitalisation revealed stained-glass windows.

Broken Arrow Ranch, La Honda · the area, not the ranch

In autumn 1970 he bought a 140-acre ranch in La Honda, California, for $340,000 cash.

The ranch has a lake, and the barn where much of Harvest was recorded. The caretaker, Luis Avila, asked how a young man could afford the place; “Old Man” is the longer answer. The Stray Gators cut “Words”, “Are You Ready for the Country?” and “Alabama” in an old barn on the ranch. The mixing was finished between Quadrafonic and Broken Arrow. Looking back on the lake playback, he said it was a little house heavy.
