September 1993, the Emmys, from the fifth row: the cast had just won and left their seats to go up and collect it. Nothing in the seats. This page starts empty too. Say something and it fills: a diner on Broadway, a soup window with rules, a bagel shop that moved, a ballfield where a stadium stood, and a New York street that was built in Studio City.

  • The Television Academy lists Jerry Seinfeld as himself, Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes and Michael Richards as Kramer; Seinfeld won Outstanding Comedy Series for 1993.

  • Jerry Seinfeld’s official tour page lists Beacon Theatre shows in December 2026, January 2027 and February 2027.

The sting

Your line is
the melody.

The theme had no tune of its own. Its composer played a bassline on a synth, with pops and clicks he made with his mouth, under Jerry’s opening monologue, and changed it every week to fit what Jerry said. So say something. The bass will answer, differently each time. Sound plays only when you press.

The bass is waiting for a line. Pick one or type your own.

The $15 set

Bill Grundfest co-founded the Comedy Cellar in 1982. Around 1984 Jerry Seinfeld dropped in for the first time, on a weeknight when a set paid $15. Grundfest offered him the $15; Seinfeld said it was not necessary.

The club’s booker remembers a night when Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Ray Romano went on back to back.

Monk’s was
Tom’s.

Its front stood in for Monk’s Café, where the four main characters met for lunch, throughout the run from 1989 to 1998. At first the show used the whole neon sign. Later the “Tom’s” part was left out of the shot, so only “Restaurant” remained.

The early seasons: the whole sign in shot.

Tom’s Restaurant has stood at Broadway and West 112th Street since the 1940s; the Zoulis family founded it and has run it ever since. Suzanne Vega’s song “Tom’s Diner” came first: she grew up in the neighbourhood and ate breakfast here before taking the subway to work. The diner has put an Elaine’s Big Salad on its menu.

Know your order
before the window.

Al Yeganeh’s takeout counter, Soup Kitchen International, was on 55th Street between Eighth Avenue and Broadway. A 1995 Seinfeld episode featured a chef nicknamed the Soup Nazi, based on Yeganeh. The real counter had rules. Keep all three and you eat.

You are fourth in line. The window is not far.

  • The stall, about 100 square feet, closed in 2004 and reopened as the Original SoupMan on Tuesday 20 July 2010.
  • The rules: choose your soup before you reach the counter, have your money ready, and move to the far left after ordering. Break them and you are refused.
  • In 2010 Time Out listed it at 259A West 55th Street, open daily from noon to 7pm, at about $5 a cup.

H&H Bagels

Kramer returns to H&H to end a 12-year walkout, then strikes again when he is refused time off for Festivus.

H&H Bagels began in 1972. The shop at 2239 Broadway closed in 2011 after the co-founder, Helmer Toro, was indicted for tax fraud. About five years later the chief executive, Jay Rushin, brought it back to the Upper West Side at 526 Columbus Avenue.

The Upper West Side shop is now on Columbus Avenue. The old shop at 2239 Broadway is gone.

Exterior shots of the original Yankee Stadium appear in several episodes. The stadium was demolished, and a public ballfield now sits on the site. Heritage Field was built in the footprint of the old stadium. The plans for its 11 acres included baseball, Little League and softball fields, memorial paving stones and viewfinders showing the old stadium.
