The Fugitive

The lamps are dark.

A Chicago manhunt that starts with a real derailment in the Smokies. The wreck is outside Dillsboro, the dam is Cheoah, and the parade was the real one.

At the wreck

The radius.

At the wreck, Gerard does the sum out loud: ninety minutes gone, four miles an hour over rough ground, so a six-mile circle, with checkpoints at fifteen miles. The film’s marshals talk about roads in southern Illinois. The real wreck is outside Dillsboro, North Carolina. Wind the clock and his ring widens round it at his pace.

One take.

The wreck was not a model. The crew derailed a real train on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, just outside Dillsboro, with its engine taken out, and had one chance to film it. Weeks of planning and test runs with a boxcar and a log car came before it.

The wreck at Dillsboro

The bus-and-train wreck was filmed on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad just outside its Dillsboro depot. The wreckage is still visible from the excursion trains.

It cost $1 million and was shot in a single take, using a real train whose locomotive had its engine removed. Test runs used a boxcar and a log car.

The train weighed 250,000 pounds and was derailed at 45 miles an hour.

The state tourism board suggests parking on Haywood Road near the Jackson County Green Energy Park and looking down the slope.

Kimble’s jump from the dam was filmed at Cheoah Dam. Some of the dam scenes were shot in Chicago’s old freight tunnels.

It was built to make power for smelting aluminium in Alcoa, Tennessee, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Loop · 17 March 1993

The real parade.

Ford suggested Chicago, where he grew up. The St Patrick’s Day chase was not staged: Davis filmed it inside the real 1993 parade, in its three hours, with the mayor in it. Another film, Blink, was shooting the same parade.

The St Patrick’s Day parade

The chase was filmed during the real parade on 17 March 1993. Mayor Richard M. Daley and Illinois Attorney General Roland Burris appear for a moment.

Andrew Davis shot it in real time, so the crew had only the parade’s three hours.

Michael Apted’s Blink was filming the same parade; the two crews kept their distance.

No source gives the 1993 route, so the parade is named here and not pinned. The parade and the green river still come every March.

The stair chase was filmed in the building’s corridors and lobby: Gerard chases Kimble down the stairs and into the lobby, where Kimble slips away.

The city hall half was finished in 1911 and dedicated on 27 February that year; the county half, on Clark Street, in 1908.

The mayor’s office is on the fifth floor, which is why Chicagoans say “the fifth floor” for the mayor’s power.

The freight tunnels

Some of the dam scenes were shot in what was left of Chicago’s freight tunnels.

By 1914 there were about 60 miles of them under the city, 7½ feet high with 2-foot-gauge track. The company asked to abandon them in 1959.

On 13 April 1992, less than a year before the shoot, the river broke into the tunnels. City Hall began to flood at 6.02am and the Chicago Hilton and Towers at 12.08pm.

Sealed and closed to the public; named here, not pinned. The photograph is from the tunnels’ working years.
