The Night Manager

BBC One · 2016 & 2026

From John le Carré · filmed 2015 and 2024

A hotel night manager walks out from behind his desk and into an arms dealer’s life. Nearly every hotel he passes through was really another one.

Push the door.

Every wing comes in from the street under the name the story gave it, and reaches the lobby as the place it really was. One revolution for each series.

Riffelalp Resort 2222m

Filming began in Zermatt on 19 March 2015, where Pine meets Roper for the first time. A reduced crew went up to keep costs down.

The Gornergrat railway names the resort’s outdoor area as a filming location. The hotel’s interior was shot in London.

Riffelalp lies at 2,222 m, about halfway between Zermatt and the Gornergrat. A 675 m tram, the highest in Europe, links the station to the hotel.

The winter season runs from 11 December 2026 to 4 April 2027.

Howard said Zermatt was the most beautiful ski resort they could reach.

The line opened in 1898, the first electric rack railway in Switzerland. It is the highest open-air railway in Europe.

The rack railway climbs from Zermatt at 1,604 m to Gornergrat station at 3,089 m. Timetables and fares are on the railway’s site.

A new name in Hartland.

After he says yes, Pine goes to ground on the Atlantic coast and becomes someone else. Five days of filming in a north Devon village, at its quay and in a cove below the abbey.

Blackpool Mill Cottage

Hartland Abbey says the BBC filmed in the village and at Blackpool Mill Cottage, which played the book’s cottage in Cornwall. The abbey lawn was the unit base for a week.

A cottage on the same estate was used in the BBC’s Sense and Sensibility.

In the novel Pine and Jed hide at his cottage at Lanyon, a few miles from Land’s End.

La Fortaleza

The 17th-century fort, now a private house, was Richard Roper’s closely guarded home.

The production moved to Majorca at the end of May 2015. Principal photography wrapped on 3 July.

Pollensa, Palma and Deià were among the island’s locations, and Palma played a CIA office in Washington.

In 2017 the location team, Tom Howard and Daniel Sampedro Palerm, were recognised at the Location Managers Guild Awards in Los Angeles.

Five weeks of the second series were shot in Colombia. More than three-quarters of the story is about the country, the Ink Factory’s head of production said.
