The first episode needed Washington. The crew found an art college in Baltimore, put a fake metal detector in its doorway, and filmed the steps.

Screening

Screen the scene.

Eight scenes from Veep are waiting at the arch. Each one looks like Washington. Wave it through if you think it was really shot there, pull it aside if it is a stand-in, and the arch will tell you where it was.

Washington, in a warehouse.

For four seasons Veep was made in Maryland: sets in a warehouse in Columbia, streets and rooms in Baltimore, 45 km (30 miles) from the White House as the crow flies.

The stage in Columbia

The sets were built on a soundstage made from an industrial warehouse in Columbia, Maryland. They included replicas of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and the West Wing.

Maryland’s governor, Martin O’Malley, toured the set in Columbia on 18 November 2013.

Baltimore Magazine calls the Columbia soundstages the show’s home base for its four Maryland years.

A private industrial building with no published address, so it is not on the map. The show left Maryland in 2015.

Armando Iannucci had made The Thick of It for the BBC, and an American pilot of it had not been picked up. HBO commissioned Veep instead; Iannucci wrote the pilot with Simon Blackwell and ran the show for four seasons, then David Mandel took over for the last three. Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Selina Meyer, a former senator from Maryland who becomes Vice President and then President, with Anna Chlumsky as Amy, Tony Hale as Gary, her body man, and Timothy Simons as Jonah.

Louis-Dreyfus won the Emmy for lead actress in a comedy six times in a row, Hale won twice, and the show won Outstanding Comedy Series for its fourth, fifth and sixth seasons. In February 2016 the crew filmed in Spring Valley, the Washington neighbourhood where Louis-Dreyfus grew up.
