Westworld

A park made to look like nobody made it. Its train rode a truck through this valley, its lab is a blue glass showroom, its future is a science park in Valencia. Pump the roll and see where it really is.

The main title · a pianola

Pump
the roll.

A real player piano stood in the production office, and the title designers rebuilt it note for note. Here each punched phrase is a place. Press the pedal and the next one passes under the tracker bar.

Castle Valley

Season one cut shots of Castle Valley into the story. A production photograph shows a flatbed trailer hauling the train carriage through the valley for the arrivals. When the crew arrived, Jonathan Nolan said it looked like Marlboro country; he later learned Marlboro commercials had been shot there. The Utah Film Commission’s list of the show’s Utah sites includes Castle Valley and SR 128, just south of Arches.

Monument Valley is the obvious guess. It is not on the film commission’s list; Nolan’s own comparison was with John Ford, who moved on from Monument Valley to Castle Valley.

Paramount Ranch

Scenes of the town of Escalante and open landscape were filmed at the ranch for Westworld. The Woolsey Fire of November 2018 destroyed much of Western Town. The chapel used in Westworld survived, and so did the train depot. The park planned to replace some of what was lost between spring 2023 and autumn 2024, keeping the ranch and its trails open.

National Park Service land with plenty of parking and open trails. Rebuilding after the fire was planned for 2023 to 2024; check the park’s page for what is open.

A tunnel or cave scene was meant for Griffith Park; when an investigation closed it, the crew went to Vasquez Rocks. The 945-acre park was the ancestral Tataviam village of Mapipinga, and has been used in many films, shows and commercials.

Pacific Design Center (the Blue Whale)

The lab and the hosts’ innards were filmed inside the Pacific Design Center. The crew had it for one night, after the shops closed at 6pm. César Pelli designed it with the Victor Gruen firm in 1971; locals call it the Blue Whale. Two more Pelli buildings, in green glass and maroon, followed in 1985–88.

Not on the map: Melody Ranch, where the guests got off the train, Placerita Canyon, Newhall, Santa Clarita. The location manager called Melody Ranch’s western backlot the show’s stage; it is where everyone coming to Westworld got off the train, and the crew worked there more than anywhere. Much of the shoot was at Melody Ranch, whose standing sets include a western town. The studio lists Westworld seasons one, two and four among its productions. It has been filmed on since 1915; Gene Autry bought it in 1952. A working studio on private land. The studio lists a contact for VIP tours and its museum, but has no public opening hours. Named here, never pinned.
