Fans will recognise Arley Hall as Thomas Shelby’s home from series three; it was a filming venue for six years, across series three to six.

The library was Tommy’s office, the South Bay his and Grace’s bedroom, and the gallery the wedding breakfast room.

In series three it was the backdrop for a showdown with Alfie Solomons.

On 17 May 1966, at the Free Trade Hall, someone in the audience shouted “Judas” after “Ballad of a Thin Man”.

Dylan answered “I don’t believe you… you’re a liar”, then played “Like a Rolling Stone” with the Hawks, later the Band.

John Cordwell and Keith Butler both later said they had shouted it; both have died, and it is still disputed.

The concert circulated as a bootleg credited to the Royal Albert Hall from the early 1970s; the official 1998 release kept the wrong name, and a 2016 box set put it right.

The hall was built between 1853 and 1856 on St Peter’s Field, the site of the Peterloo Massacre.

It is now The Edwardian Manchester, a Radisson Collection hotel with 263 rooms.

Pete Howard opened Sifters in 1977 and still runs it.

The Gallagher brothers came in a lot in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When the Supersonic sleeve came out, the shop knew them at once.

Noel is said to have written the shop into Shakermaker while sitting at the traffic lights outside.

Noel named the shop in Shakermaker, and bought albums here.

Fans still come, and Manchester music tours stop here almost every week. It mostly stocks records made before 1990.

Oasis shared a rehearsal room in the Boardwalk’s basement with the band Sister Lovers.

The club ran on Little Peter Street from 1985 to 1999.

On 18 August 1991, after rehearsing in the basement for a while, they got a slot upstairs, supporting the Birmingham band Sweet Jesus. It was Liam’s first gig with the band.

Noel was away, working as a guitar technician for Inspiral Carpets. He heard about the gig from their mother when he phoned home.

Liam remembered it as horrible: the only people there were their mates, and he was trying to act like Mick Jagger in front of them.

Maine Road was home to Manchester City from 1923 to 2003.

Oasis played their first headline stadium shows here on 27 and 28 April 1996.

40,000 people came each night. Manic Street Preachers and Ocean Colour Scene supported.

Noel and Liam were City fans from birth. People told them it would rain in Manchester in April; Noel’s answer was that it rains whatever the month.

After City left, the stadium was demolished and the site became an urban village of about 230 houses and 240 flats.

Burgess began the novel in early 1961, after teaching in Malaya and Brunei, and it was published in 1962.

Nadsat is Russian for teen. Burgess learned basic Russian before a working holiday in Leningrad in 1961.

A 1973 recording suggests the narrator’s voice owes something to Manchester voices from Harpurhey and Moss Side.

The Foundation keeps the Burgess archive and runs events, exhibitions and concerts in a converted mill.

Burgess wanted readers to pick Nadsat up from context and resisted a glossary. Glossaries appeared anyway, starting with the 1963 Norton edition.

From Russian: moloko is milk, droog a friend, viddy to see, deng money, devotchka a girl, veck a man, horrorshow good, starry old, gulliver a head, malenky little and goloss a voice.

The Smiths played their first gig at the Ritz in October 1982, as local support to Blue Rondo à la Turk, in front of about 300 people.

Dale Hibbert played bass that night. Andy Rourke joined after.

From the early gigs on, Morrissey strewed the stage with gladioli and daffodils, waved bunches round his head and showered the crowd with petals.

The Ritz was built in 1928 as a dance hall, with a sprung floor and a revolving stage. It is Grade II listed.

The venue names the Smiths among the Manchester bands whose shows in the 1980s and 1990s made its name.

Strawberry opened in 1967, the first studio of its kind built outside London. 10cc, Joy Division, the Stone Roses and the Smiths all recorded here.

This Charming Man, in the version released as the single, was recorded here. A London mix made at Matrix Studios was judged not good enough.

The single came out on 31 October 1983, Johnny Marr’s 20th birthday, and reached number 25.

The studio became offices in the early 1990s and got a heritage blue plaque in 2007.

Mike Joyce launched a crowdfunder with the charity Pancreatic Cancer Action to paint a mural of him.

The street artist Akse painted it on the side of the Wheatsheaf, in the Northern Quarter, an area close to Rourke’s heart.

In early June 2023 Coldplay played four shows at the Etihad on the Music of the Spheres tour; the third drew 60,000 fans.

It was the first tour with PixMob’s seven-LED wristband, made of compostable plant-based plastic from sugarcane.

Hours before doors, more than 100 local freelancers cleaned and refurbished the bands from the night before. They were handed out at the gate and collected at the exit, and about 90 per cent came back.

PixMob says each band lasts hundreds of shows; then the casings come off and the rest goes to compost.

The lighting director treats the bands like any other light: some songs leave them dark, others send light bouncing round the crowd.

The band played the Lesser Free Trade Hall on 4 June and 20 July 1976.

Two Bolton students, Howard Trafford and Pete McNeish, soon Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks, invited them. No more than 50 people came.

Roughly 40 people were there in June. The return a few weeks later drew hundreds.

People in that first audience went on to form Buzzcocks, Magazine, Joy Division, the Smiths and the Fall.

Peter Hook and Bernard Sumner decided to form a band after the show.

The building opened in 1920 as The Picture House, became the Savoy in 1921 and was renamed the Gaumont in 1946.

The Gibbs moved to Chorlton in 1955. They lived on Keppel Road, and the boys went to Oswald Road Primary School, a short walk from the Gaumont.

Children mimed to records here before the Saturday matinee. The brothers made their first public appearance this way; the official history dates it to 1956, other accounts to December 1957.

The record they were meant to mime to, reportedly the Everly Brothers’ Wake Up Little Susie, was broken, so they sang it live.

For years it held Co-op Funeral Care. In 2019 a volunteer group, Chorlton Community Land Trust, ran a Stayin’ Alive campaign to save it, backed by the wider Gibb family.

In 2022 the Co-op agreed a sale to Southway Housing Trust, which spoke of a scheme of affordable homes; the land trust said it would not support demolition.
