Manhattan, made in Toronto

The story’s Manhattan names.
Mary Harron’s film of Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel, a satire of 1980s Wall Street. Its Manhattan of offices, clubs and restaurant tables was mostly shot in downtown Toronto in the winter of 1999.
A tasting menu of four rooms
The film’s Manhattan is a run of restaurant tables, and nearly every one of them was a room in Toronto. Pick a course as the film names it, plate it, much more plate than food, and serve. What arrives is the room that played it.
Harry’s at Biff’s Bistro, Texarkana at the Montana restaurant, Barcadia passed off as Dorsia at Monsoon, and the lunch with Kimball in the room the guide names as the Savoy; Dorsia invented by Ellis.
Choose a course from the menu.
Nothing served yet. Every course is a real room you can sit in, or nearly.

Filming began in February 1999 and ran for seven weeks, mostly in downtown Toronto. Mies van der Rohe’s black towers became the firm; a 1903 hotel bar became a club; a Sherbourne Street music hall became the 1980s dance floor. Choose a line of the ledger.

Office towers
66 Wellington Street West, Financial District, Toronto
The black towers of the Toronto-Dominion Centre stood in for Pierce & Pierce, the firm where Bateman works.
The office interiors were shot on a sound stage instead: the owners of the building Harron wanted feared bad publicity.
Mies van der Rohe was the design consultant; the first tower was finished in 1967, and the complex now has six towers and a pavilion.

Nearly every other room on this page can be found. His cannot. The building is invented, like Dorsia and the firm’s own address, and the flat was built as a set. Mary Harron and her designer Gideon Ponte made it a home with nothing in it to say who lived there.
The American Gardens Building on West 81st Street and 358 Exchange Place are fictitious; Dorsia was invented by Ellis.

The few shots made in the city itself
The story is set in Manhattan, and a second unit did shoot there: Wall Street at the start of an evening, a cash machine on Madison Avenue that was only a prop, and the building by the park where Paul Allen lives.

Mary Harron wrote it with Guinevere Turner and directed it; Edward R. Pressman produced. Harron cast Christian Bale, was fired when the studio wanted Leonardo DiCaprio, and came back with Bale when that version fell through. Jared Leto is Paul Allen, Josh Lucas is McDermott, Justin Theroux is Bryce, Samantha Mathis is Courtney and Matt Ross is Luis. Andrzej Sekuła shot it and John Cale wrote the score. It opened at Sundance on 21 January 2000 and in cinemas on 14 April.
