Dark

Winden is not on any map. A pine wood, a cemetery chapel, a bridge over a dead railway, an academy, a reading room and a ruined chemical works are.

2019Slide the moon’s year against the sun’s

The 33-year cycle

Two years that disagree.

A year of moons is eleven days shorter than a year of the sun. Every year the moon’s new year slips eleven days earlier, until, 33 years on, the two agree again. The makers of Dark built the series on that: the passage only opens in steps of 33 years.

In step. · the series goes back to 1953 and forward to 2052.

The cave was never there.

The cave entrance never existed: the production built it as a set in a hollow in the Saarmund forest. The set was taken down in December 2019.

It lies on the Fontane hiking trail between Saarmund and Tremsdorf. A 22 km walk to the Dark locations starts in Tremsdorf and ends in Stahnsdorf; the first stretch is hilly.

The set has gone. Walk the Fontane trail through the pines from Tremsdorf; there is a hollow and a forest, nothing more. Pinned at Tremsdorf, where the walk begins.

The hut

The hut stands near the cave site in the Saarmund forest and is privately owned; the land may not be entered. The bunker entrance was built beside it, but there is no bunker: its interior was filmed in a studio.

Inside: the Einhornhöhle

Most of the cave interiors were shot on a purpose-built set; the few shots in a real cave were made in the Einhornhöhle near Scharzfeld, in the West Harz.

Guided tours only, on the hour, Friday to Sunday 11am–4pm until 1 November 2026. Park at “Parkplatz Einhornhöhle”; cars may not drive up to the cave.

The church in the trees.

The wooden chapel of the Südwestkirchhof plays the church of Winden, and comes back again and again. The church, its forecourt and the meadow opposite are the settings for key scenes; the crew built gravestones on the meadow for characters who die.

Depending on the scene, the chapel has vintage cars outside it or stands as a ruin in a post-apocalyptic future made with special effects.

It was built by Gustav Werner and consecrated on 28 March 1909, modelled on Norwegian stave churches but built of horizontal logs. The cemetery is Germany’s second largest; Heinrich Zille, F. W. Murnau and Manfred Krug are buried there.

A working cemetery. Open 7am–6pm from October to February, 7am–8pm from March. Come quietly; the bench and the meadow opposite are where the scenes were.

The bridge over the dead railway

Many scenes were shot at the bridge that carries the Königsweg over what is left of the old cemetery railway, on the Berlin city boundary near Stahnsdorf. The line ran from Wannsee to Stahnsdorf and was closed with the Wall in 1961; some of the track is still there.

The caravan’s car park

The caravan in the series stands in the car park of the old Dreilinden service station. The round red pop-art building is from the 1970s and is listed; the Checkpoint Bravo border crossing was once here.

Look at the round building from the public road; the car park is not a public space.

After the end.

In the series the world ends on 27 June 2020, the day the last season came out. What is left is filmed at two sites outside Berlin.

On the date

Krampnitz

Most of the post-apocalyptic Winden was filmed in the old barracks at Krampnitz, on the northern edge of Potsdam. The gymnasium where Jonas looks for food has been pulled down for new housing; some buildings, the officers’ casino among them, are listed.

The barracks were built in 1937–1939 to plans by Robert Kisch. A district for about 10,000 people is being built on 140 hectares; the first parts opened to the public in August 2025.

Now a building site turning into a new district; the first parts opened in August 2025. Keep to the open streets and the fences.
