415 Monroe Street

Where he was born

A plaque marks the former building at 415 Monroe Street where Sinatra was born in 1915. A star honouring him is set in the pavement beside it.

In 1947 people in Hoboken pelted him with tomatoes during a parade; the town made its peace with him later.

A plaque by the door and a star in the pavement: see them from the street. The building is a private home.

Bronze, with the pinky ring

Carolyn D. Palmer’s bronze, over six feet tall, shows him in a three-piece suit, leaning on a lamp post with his hat tipped to one side. His daughter Tina sent one of his rings to the sculptor, so the statue wears his pinky ring.

In 1979 Hoboken renamed River Road as Sinatra Drive; the waterfront park was named after him in 1998. It was unveiled in December 2021, on what would have been his 106th birthday, and paid for with $100,000 in private donations.

On 30 December 1942 Sinatra played his first solo show at the Paramount, to some 5,000 fans. Two years later the line went round the block. Every dot below is a thousand fans: add them until Broadway is full.

The Paramount, now

In October 1944 more than 30,000 bobby-soxers swarmed the theatre; when thousands were turned away from the sold-out shows, the Columbus Day Riot broke out.

The Paramount Theatre opened in November 1926 and closed in February 1966; the building became a New York City landmark in 1988. Today it is an office building, with shops and a Hard Rock Cafe at street level.

The arch and marquee are on Broadway at 43rd Street. The theatre is gone; the ground floor is shops and a restaurant.

First in
the round tower.

Capitol Studios opened in early 1956 at 1750 Vine Street, in a 13-storey tower shaped like a stack of LPs.

Sinatra was the first artist to record there: in February 1956 he conducted a 60-piece orchestra for an instrumental album, and he first sang there on 8 March 1956.

  • A Swingin’ Affair
  • Come Fly with Me
  • Only the Lonely
  • Nice ’n’ Easy

Between 1956 and 1961 he made A Swingin’ Affair, Come Fly with Me, Only the Lonely and Nice ’n’ Easy in Studio A, a 2,700-square-foot room big enough to sing with the orchestra. His last Capitol session was in September 1961, for Point of No Return.

Twin Palms, 1148 East Alejo Road

Sinatra commissioned E. Stewart Williams to design the house after he earned his first million dollars, in 1947. It has four bedrooms, seven bathrooms and a piano-shaped pool, and is named for the two palms beside the pool.

It was his main home from 1948 to 1957; a dent in the master bathroom sink is said to come from a champagne bottle and a row with Ava Gardner.

His recording studio is still in place, though no longer connected.

Book it for a stay, an event or a private tour through the estate; otherwise see it from East Alejo Road and respect the neighbours.

Sinatra owned the Cal Neva from 1960 to 1968; the building straddles the California–Nevada line on Lake Tahoe’s north-east shore. He built a helipad above the kitchen, and tunnels let famous guests move about unseen.

The resort opened in 1926 and has been closed since 2013. A $298 million financing package is paying to rebuild it; it is due to reopen in 2027.
