Mission StMeridian AveMetro line

It is now the Century House, South Pasadena Cultural Landmark No. 34, at 1000 Mission Street, steps from the South Pasadena Metro station.

The film opens with a five-minute shot through the eyes of a masked killer: the young Michael Myers, played by Will Sandin. This house is where that opening murder was filmed. The shot was made on the last day of a condensed 20-day schedule, and about two days went to the house.

With the houses round it coming down, the 1888 house is bought for a silver dollar by the historian David Margrave and moved up the street.

Offices now, and private. Look from the street or the station car park, and leave the porch out of your photographs.

Looking for a cheap mask, the art director finds one at Bert Wheeler’s magic shop in Hollywood, and a clown mask as a spare.

It is a Don Post Studios Captain Kirk mask. On Halloween II, the illustrator Rick Sternbach finds the maker’s name moulded into the neck of the last one left, and the company confirms it.

The mask, bought for under $2, is painted white and its eyeholes widened.

Where Michael takes it

The hardware store building

Michael takes his mask and knife from a hardware store, played by a frame shop on Mission Street. In 1978 the blocky brick building was a frame shop standing in for the hardware store. It houses restaurants now.

Discover Los Angeles calls it the former Nichol’s Hardware building, where Myers steals his mask, rope and knives, and names Radhika Modern Indian as the restaurant there.

A working restaurant now. Go in for lunch or dinner.

Haddonfield, Illinois

It isn’t there.Haddonfield, Illinois, is not a real place. The name is borrowed from New Jersey, and the leaves there are real.

South Pasadena in June. Green, as it was in the spring of 1978.

The name comes from Haddonfield, New Jersey, a borough in Camden County. It is the hometown of Debra Hill, who co-wrote and produced the film. Hill said she used the name as a tribute to the town where she grew up.

A real borough. Nothing was filmed here: come for the name, and for an autumn nobody had to bring in bags.
