Heat

Two men, one city, and one table in Beverly Hills where they finally sit down. Spinotti filmed it with two cameras at once. Roll them.

Kate Mantilini · two cameras, one take

Roll the cameras.

For the coffee scene Dante Spinotti ran two cameras at once, so close they barely missed each other. Here each one sees a different Los Angeles. Camera A stays on McCauley and his crew; camera B stays on Hanna. Roll both and you get the only places where the two men share a frame.

Both cameras cut. Roll camera A, camera B, or both.

Where we read it

Nothing rolling. The table is empty.

Neil McCauley and Chuck Adamson

The coffee was real.

Neil McCauley was real: a thief who had served time on Alcatraz, tracked in 1964 by a Chicago detective, Chuck Adamson. The two men met for coffee once, as the film shows.

On 25 March 1964 McCauley and his crew followed an armoured car to a National Tea grocery store. Police had blocked the exits, and McCauley was shot dead on the lawn of a house nearby. He was 50.

Adamson went on to produce television and film. Mann wrote the script in 1979; it was first made as a TV film, L.A. Takedown, shot in nineteen days and shown in 1989.

Hanna and McCauley meet for coffee at Kate Mantilini. It closed in 2014 after a rent rise.

Spinotti shot the scene with two cameras at once, placed so close they barely missed each other.

Morphosis, the practice of Thom Mayne and Michael Rotondi, turned a former Wells Fargo bank branch into the restaurant and wrapped it in a scaffold-like cage.

Inside, a sculptural orrery rose through a fourteen-foot skylight to a sundial on the roof.

The restaurant has gone. The building stands on Wilshire Boulevard at Doheny Drive; look at it from the pavement.

Albert C. Martin & Associates designed it. It was finished in 1981, rises 48 floors to 627 feet, and was the Citigroup Center before it became FourFortyFour South Flower.

Union Bank Plaza, finished in 1968, was the first skyscraper of the Bunker Hill redevelopment. In 2020 it became the first skyscraper in Los Angeles named a Historic-Cultural Monument.

The film opens here: McCauley gets off a train at Redondo Beach station.
