Claire Danes · CarrieDamian Lewis · Brody

A CIA officer becomes sure a rescued American prisoner has been turned, and nobody sees him the same way twice. The story said Washington, Caracas and Islamabad; the crew stood in Raleigh, San Juan and Cape Town. Read the plates

The Peabody’s word for it

Read the plates.

When Homeland won a Peabody in 2012, the citation called it a Rorschach test: everyone sees something different. The places were read the same way. Each plate carries what the story saw. Drop ink three times and the real place comes up through the blot.

Where we read it
  • The Peabody Awards recognised the series in April 2012, calling it, among other things, a Rorschach test of post-9/11 doubts, fears and suspicions.

Season five · from 2 June 2015

Berlin played Berlin.

Plate VIII reads Berlin, and it is. Four seasons give no stand-in to read: two were made where they were set, and two borrowed countries the sources never narrow to a city.

  • Season 2

    Beirut → Israel

Israeli cities stood in for Beirut for two weeks in May 2012; the sources do not name them.

  • Season 5

    Berlin = Berlin

Set in Berlin, made in Berlin and at Studio Babelsberg next door in Potsdam.

  • Season 6

    New York = New York

Carrie lives in Brooklyn, and the season was filmed in New York, with Morocco playing Abu Dhabi and Israel.

  • Season 8

    Kabul → Morocco

Morocco played Afghanistan for the final season; no single city is named.

Carrie

The writers gave Carrie Mathison bipolar disorder, diagnosed when she was at college. Claire Danes prepared by learning about the CIA and about the nuances of playing someone who lives with the condition. She was given access to CIA headquarters at Langley and met the officer the character was loosely based on.

Danes won the Emmy for lead actress in a drama twice; Damian Lewis won it for lead actor once.
