Jaws

Amity was Edgartown. Brody’s beach-closed signs came from a Main Street hardware store, now a restaurant, and the town hall still has the film’s clock. Paint the sign, and see what the island kept.

Something on the line.

Hold the ferry.
It only goes while you do.

The On Time ferry to Chappaquiddick appears in the film. The harbour it crosses between Edgartown and Chappaquiddick is 527 feet wide.

The shack started here.

Scouting for Quint’s shack, the production designer Joe Alves saw the Old Sculpin and realised it was the design he wanted. You can spot the building as a backdrop in Jaws.

Once a boat shed, a whale-oil factory and a grain store, it is named after the boatbuilder Manuel Swartz Roberts, who sold it to the Martha’s Vineyard Art Association.

A gallery of island artists, open daily in season: Monday to Saturday 10–5, Sunday 12–5.
