Castle Hill and the 6
Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx on 24 July 1969 and grew up in Castle Hill; her parents were both born in Puerto Rico.
She was the middle of three sisters, who shared a bed, in a strict Catholic house that went to Mass every Sunday.
She learned flamenco, jazz and ballet at the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, and taught dance to younger children there, Kerry Washington among them.
Her first album, On the 6 (1999), is named for the subway line she rode between home in the Bronx and work in Manhattan. Its first single, If You Had My Love, spent five weeks at No. 1 in the United States.

After Holy Family School she went to Preston, a private Catholic school for girls.
She ran track at national level, did gymnastics, played softball and took a lead role in a school Godspell.
The school lists her as an alumna of 1987; her younger sister Lynda followed in 1989. Preston was founded in 1947 by the Sisters of the Divine Compassion; its first building was Collis P. Huntington’s waterfront mansion.

Fly Girl
Rosie Perez, the show’s choreographer, chose Lopez as a Fly Girl, and she moved to Los Angeles in late 1991 for the job.
In Living Color was taped on stage 7 at Metromedia Square on Sunset Boulevard. She taped the show by day and went to Aaron Speiser’s acting classes at night.
After two seasons she left to dance for Janet Jackson, and turned down Jackson’s 1993 world tour to act.
Metromedia sold the land to the Los Angeles Unified School District in 2000; the Starsteps sculpture on the roof was taken down and shipped to Chicago.

The Alamodome: where the film shot that night, with 35,000 people.
The concert that opens the film was shot here on 15 September 1996, in front of 35,000 people who came in answer to newspaper advertisements.
More than 21,000 people auditioned for Selena at casting calls held from 16 to 23 March 1996. Lopez sang, danced and played the elopement scene for the crew and for Selena’s father, and spent time with the family in Corpus Christi.
It was the first time she had performed for a crowd that size; Selena’s own recorded voice was dubbed over her singing. She was the first Latina actress to be paid $1 million for a film.
The Alamodome opened on 15 May 1993 and seats 64,000.
