One day,
shuffled.

Everything happens within 24 hours, but the stories are shuffled, so a man shot dead on a toilet is back, unaware, in a later scene. Read the issue as the film prints it, then as the day happened.

As printed: Vincent dies at story 7, and is back, alive, for stories 10, 11 and 12. Between the places you can stand at, that order covers 145 km; the other covers 127 km.

The order of the day is our reading of the film. Distances are straight lines between the places on our map; private homes are left out.

Story 1 · Hawthorne Boulevard

A coffee shop
with three names.

The coffee shop where Pumpkin and Honey Bunny talk themselves into robbing the place was the Hawthorne Grill, 13763 Hawthorne Boulevard.

1994: The Hawthorne Grill, where the film’s robbery is planned.

It opened in 1956 as Holly’s, a Googie diner with an angled, overhanging front built to catch drivers’ eyes. The diner was demolished to make way for an AutoZone car-parts store.

The diner is gone. A car-parts store stands on the corner of Hawthorne Boulevard and 137th Street: look from the pavement.

Stories 2 to 4 · Beverly Hills, Glendale, Atwater Village

Dinner,
on the budget.

The ledger

$0 of $8,000,000

The most expensive line in the budget is one restaurant that never existed.

The restaurant itself was a set built in a Culver City warehouse. At $150,000 it was the largest line item in the budget. In the end the whole film cost $8 million: the budget was $8.5 million with contingency, and $500,000 went back.

Jack Rabbit Slim’s (the old Grand Central Bowl) · 1435 Flower Street, Glendale

The outside of Jack Rabbit Slim’s was a recently closed bowling alley, the Grand Central Bowl, at 1435 Flower Street in Glendale. Disney owns the building, now part of the Walt Disney Imagineering campus; it keeps some original features but sits behind a wall.

The dance is a nod to Godard’s Bande à part, which also gave Tarantino’s company, A Band Apart, its name.

Part of a private Disney campus behind a wall. There is nothing to visit, and little to see from Flower Street.

    The Raymond Theatre

Butch’s fight, the one he was meant to lose, was filmed at the Raymond Theatre, 129 North Raymond Avenue, Pasadena. After the fight Butch runs from the building down an alley off North Raymond Avenue.

The theatre opened on 5 April 1921, and later had a second life as the Perkins Palace music venue. It was gutted in 2009 and has been converted into apartments and shops.

Now apartments and shops on North Raymond Avenue. See the front from the street.

    The River Glen Motel (site)

Butch and Fabienne spend the night after the fight at the River Glen Motel, 2934 Riverside Drive. The Glendale-Hyperion Bridge, opened in 1929 as the Victory Memorial Bridge, is in the background. The motel was demolished, and businesses have since been built on the spot.

The motel is gone and new businesses stand on the lot. The bridge is still there: see it from Riverside Drive.

The New Beverly Cinema

The building dates from the 1920s; Sherman Torgan made it a repertory cinema in 1978 and ran it until his death in 2007. After ten years as its benefactor, Tarantino became owner and head programmer, starting in October 2014. It shows 35mm prints (and some 16mm), many from Tarantino’s own collection.

Screenings most nights, on film. Midnight shows are $12; Kiddee Matinees $10, with free popcorn for under-13s.

The Vista opened in 1923 for vaudeville and film: one screen, 400 seats. Tarantino bought it in 2021 to show films on 35mm, as at the New Beverly; it is in True Romance, which he wrote. In October 2026 it is showing The Birds from 10 to 22 October.
