The name is Dickie Greenleaf’s; the face is Tom’s. Steven Zaillian’s Ripley travels the same way: almost every place in it is carrying another place’s name.

The Amalfi Coast · 1960
Zaillian and production designer David Gropman drove the Amalfi Coast looking for the town where Dickie Greenleaf had settled. Most were too modernised for a story set in 1960; Atrani, a village of about 800 people, was right. The series was filmed in 2021, during Covid, and Zaillian recalled that there were no tourists.
Tom’s bus pulls in below the Collegiata di Santa Maria Maddalena, above the Gulf of Salerno, and he climbs a long flight of steps to reach Dickie. The interior of Marge’s Atrani apartment was built on a stage in Rome.
A public square and beach, free at any hour. Buses on the Amalfi Coast road stop above the village.

Our drawing, not the set. The clutter is what any village has now; the production looked for one that had little of it.
A train yard in Rome
Tom moves through railway stations to stay ahead of what he has done. The Rome, Venice and San Remo platforms are one platform: 300 feet of it (about 91 metres), built at a train yard in Rome. Columns that turned on their axis made it Rome, Venice or San Remo. Turn the columns until they agree.
The Hollywood Reporter: 300 feet of platform was built at a train yard in Rome, rotating columns differentiated the Rome, Venice and San Remo stations, and five period cars were brought from Milan; the Palazzo dei Congressi plays the outside of Rome’s station.
2 Roma, 2 Venezia, 1 San Remo. The columns do not agree: no train.
The lamp the series is lit by
Robert Elswit, who shot the series, named Caravaggio as an inspiration: Zaillian wanted light and shadow on the world and on faces. Tom keeps going to look at him. Under each painting is a gallery label. Turn it from the screen to today.
The Hollywood Reporter: Elswit says Caravaggio, whose work is featured throughout the series, was an inspiration; Zaillian wanted to emphasise the play of light and shadow, in the world and on people’s faces.

The production filmed in Naples in October 2021. The pensione’s rooms were built on a stage in Rome. The real Palermo in this World is one oratory, and an empty altar.

Venice · filmed January 2022

The 15th-century Palazzo Polignac is Tom’s palazzo in Venice. Gropman knew the city’s palazzi from designing Casanova there in 2005. When Marge first sees it she asks who died; Tom says an aunt.
Choose a room.
A private palazzo, not open to visitors. See it from the water or the far bank of the Grand Canal.
IndieWire: Marge asks who died when she first sees the palazzo, and Tom says it was the aunt who raised him; Gropman on the bedroom left as it was and the study the production furnished.

About a hundred extras in early-1960s costume filled the arcades of Caffè Florian on Piazza San Marco. Gropman scouted Piazza San Marco while most of Europe was in lockdown, with not a soul in it.
The piazza is free; Florian is a working café under the arcades.
Bearers

Tom Ripley
Zaillian’s first choice: he had only heard him, as a voice on the telephone in Locke. Scott learned Italian for three or four months before filming.

Marge Sherwood
She felt no pressure to copy the 1999 film; the series made its own versions of the characters.

Dickie Greenleaf
He liked that Dickie is seen only through Tom’s eyes: what Tom sees of him.
Writer and director
He adapted Highsmith’s novel as an eight-episode series, directed it and won the 2024 Emmy for directing; Robert Elswit won it for cinematography. We have found no free photograph of Zaillian.
The Hollywood Reporter: Scott was Zaillian’s first choice, known to him from his voice in Locke; Scott learned Italian for three or four months; Fanning and Flynn on their roles.
Television Academy: Ripley won four 2024 Emmys, including directing (Steven Zaillian) and cinematography (Robert Elswit).
