On Ocean Drive a hotel says its name down a tall fin. Here every scene has one. The side facing you says where the story puts it; turn a fin to read where the camera really stood.

Twelve fins, every one of them reading Miami.

  • Producer Martin Bregman planned twelve weeks in Miami. Local Cuban opposition, and a city commissioner’s proposal to bar permits on city property, moved the shoot to Los Angeles and Santa Barbara for twenty-four weeks; a 27 April 1983 Variety item reports a quiet return to Miami for ten to twelve days of exteriors.

  • The Miami Tourist Board declined to let the film shoot there. The Fontainebleau scene was shot in April 1983 and the apartment scene on Ocean Drive.

728 Ocean Drive

Tony and Manny’s first job takes them to an apartment block on Ocean Drive, and it goes wrong.

Built in 1953 as the Sun Ray Apartments, to a design by Don Reiff, in the style Miami calls MiMo, Miami Modern.

Its patio staircase is the one used in Scarface; the scene in the apartment was filmed upstairs.

Now a pharmacy. The patio staircase and its plaque are on the Ocean Drive front, just south of 8th Street.

The city that said no has a plaque.

Miami would not have the film. Now the staircase from its first Ocean Drive scene has a plaque of its own, on the wall of a pharmacy.

Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is the centre of the Art Deco District. Streamline Moderne dominates the street.

The district was listed on the National Register on 14 May 1979. It holds 960 historic buildings, the largest collection of Art Deco in the world.

Most of its buildings went up between the Great Depression and the early 1940s, in styles called Streamline, Tropical and Med-deco.

In April 1983 one scene was shot here: by the pool, Manny tries his luck with a woman and gets a slap for it.

Morris Lapidus designed it, and it opened in 1954 on the grounds of Harvey Firestone’s estate. Lapidus wore bow ties and worked them into the design.

Expanded with new towers, it reopened in November 2008 and joined the National Register of Historic Places that December.

Freedomtown, the camp where the new arrivals wait, was doubled under the interchange of the 110 and the 10, near West 17th Street.
