A cook carries a roll of knives from kitchen to kitchen. A kitchen runs on tickets: an order comes in, it gets fired, someone watches the clock, and when it is ready it goes to the pass. The Bear ran that way from 2022 to 2026, on screen and in a real beef stand on Orleans Street. Here every real place is a ticket: a stand, two fine-dining rooms, a food tour, a ballpark, a cinema, a river, a house in Oak Park and a bakery in Copenhagen.

Mr. Beef on Orleans

Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism board, puts The Bear’s restaurant at Mr. Beef in River North. The show is loosely based on the Zucchero family and Mr. Beef. Its writer, Christopher Storer, is a childhood friend of Chris Zucchero, who runs the shop.

Joe Zucchero, who had started out as a butcher at a Dominick’s grocery, bought the place in 1978. He died on 1 March 2023, aged 69.

In season 3 the shop is used for flashbacks, such as Mikey offering Tina a job.

Seven forks.
One week shut.

“Forks”, episode 7 of season 2, in which Richie stages at a fine-dining restaurant, was shot in Ever’s own kitchen. Ever shut for a week for the shoot and switched off its online bookings. A crew of about 25 arrived within days of the first call.

The chef and co-owner, Curtis Duffy, was there throughout and plated the food. Matt Danko, a Chicago chef and the show’s culinary consultant, had suggested Ever to the location scouts.
