HBO · Newport · the Hudson · Troy
New York, the 1880s. The new-money Russells move in across the street from old-money Agnes van Rhijn, and Bertha Russell sets out to reach the top of Manhattan society. It is a story about who receives whom. The doors the series filmed behind are real, and most of them now open to anyone. Leave your card

The rules of calling
You did not knock and walk in. You left a card and waited: a card sent back meant you could visit, silence meant you could not. A turned corner showed you had come in person rather than sending a servant. Bertha Russell’s climb is a story of doors like these. Call on eight of them.
By the nineteenth century a calling card, about the size of a business card with a name and sometimes an address, was how people kept or raised their place in society.
You left your card first and did not expect to be let in; a card sent back to you meant a visit would be welcome. No card, or a card in an envelope, meant it would not.
A card left with a turned corner showed you had come in person, not sent a servant.
The whole system needed servants to open the door and take the cards.

Troy, Tarrytown, Yonkers
The New York of the story was mostly found up the Hudson. Troy kept enough nineteenth-century blocks to be dressed with horses and carriages, and its bank’s concert hall became the Academy of Music. Nearer the city, Lyndhurst and Glenview lent their rooms to the Fanes and the Astors.

Washington Place and Second Street, Central Troy Historic District, Troy, New York
In May 2021 the production filmed in the Central Troy Historic District, where several city blocks were made to look like a Victorian street.
In season one, five blocks of Troy were dressed with horses, carriages and extras as New York, and Washington Park stood in for Madison Square Park.
Six businessmen laid out Washington Park in 1839 on the model of London’s squares, with the park kept for residents.
Martin Scorsese used the Second Street area as 1870s Manhattan in The Age of Innocence, in 1993.
The streets round it are public; the park itself is kept for the residents of the houses on it, so see it through the railings.

30 Second Street, Troy, New York
It plays New York’s Academy of Music.
Completed in 1875 to George B. Post’s design, it is known for its acoustics and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1989.
Its Odell organ was built in 1882 for the New York financier William Belden’s house and moved into the hall in 1890.
A working concert hall above the old bank; the programme and box office are on the hall’s own site.

635 South Broadway, Tarrytown, New York
The Fane household was filmed inside the mansion, including scenes in its dining room and art gallery.
Its lawns were Central Park in the opening sequence; its 1894 bowling alley was rebuilt as a ferry terminal for the first episode, and its carriage house held the Globe’s offices.
Lyndhurst says George Russell was based partly on Jay Gould, its third owner.
Alexander Jackson Davis designed it in 1838; Jay Gould bought it in 1880 and kept it until he died in 1892.

511 Warburton Avenue, Yonkers, New York
Glenview’s interiors played the Astors’ townhouse in season one.
The house was built in 1877 for the financier John Bond Trevor, to a design by Charles W. Clinton, with carved woodwork by Daniel Pabst.
Its period rooms appear in the series, the museum’s Wikipedia entry notes.
Glenview’s restored rooms are part of the museum; hours and tickets are on the museum’s site.
