The Goonies

A treasure hunt that starts in a real jail, runs past a real bowling alley, lines up a coin on the real coast, and ends under a sound stage in Burbank. Follow the dotted line.

The county jail

This is the jail the Fratelli brothers break out of in the opening car chase. It was a working jail from 1914 to 1976, and a working set for three films, The Goonies among them.

The second gallery is in the old cells and holds the Goonies material, with a station where visitors leave notes for the Goonies.

The museum is about 800 square feet; it had 54,000 visitors in 2024, and there is a plan to move to a larger space. A Fratelli Jeep Cherokee sits outside.

The house was built in 1884–85 for Captain George Flavel, a Columbia River bar pilot, and designed by Carl W. Leick. The museum calls it one of the best-preserved Queen Anne houses in the Northwest.

Stage 16, Burbank

Under the stage.
Play the bones.

The pirate cavern and ship were built on the lot then called The Burbank Studios. Strike each bone: every one rings out a number from the stage where the ship was built.

Where this comes from

Silence in the cavern. Strike a bone.

Stage 16 is the largest stage on the lot: 32,130 square feet, and 65 feet from the floor to the lighting grid. The Inferno was 138 feet long and 42 feet from the tank floor to the top of its rear deck. It was built full size in about six months, with crews working round the clock in shifts.

With both tanks in use the stage holds almost 2.3 million gallons, which take about 16 hours to fill. There were not enough experienced plasterers for the cave walls, so the plaster foreman brought his father out of retirement.

Play every bone to hear what happened to the ship.

The film’s final scene was shot here, where the Russian River meets the Pacific. That is 830 km (516 miles) south of Haystack Rock as the crow flies.

It is part of Sonoma Coast State Park, reached off Highway 1 just south of the Russian River in Jenner. The end credits thank Astoria, Cannon Beach and Bodega Bay.

The film opens in Los Angeles and New York on 7 June 1985 and takes $9.1 million on 1,705 screens in its first weekend.
