The Green Mile

Del’s spool, coloured with crayons, waits at the end of the floor.

Frank Darabont’s film of Stephen King’s novel, 1999. Its Louisiana prison is two places: a castle-fronted penitentiary in West Nashville that had already closed, and a set on a stage in West Hollywood.

The mouse on the Mile

Throw the spool.

In King’s novel, Del throws a wooden spool down the block and the mouse runs after it like a dog, and when it bounces off the wall, pushes it back to him. Harry brings him crayons to colour it, to make the trick more like a circus act. On the set, twenty-four mice played Mr. Jingles. Colour the spool and throw it: each time it comes home, it brings back one of the real places the film was made in.

Tennessee State Prison

The old state prison in West Nashville played the outside of Cold Mountain Penitentiary; the story is set in Louisiana.

It opened in 1898: a Gothic, fortress-like building inside rock walls about 20 feet high and 3 feet thick, with 800 small cells.

The Historic American Buildings Survey noted that, at first glance, it looks less like a prison than a romantic European castle.

It closed in June 1992. The interior was declared off-limits in 2011 because of asbestos, and an EF3 tornado badly damaged the building in March 2020.

It has been a film set before and since, from Nashville (1975) and Ernest Goes to Jail (1990) to The Last Castle (2001) and Walk the Line (2005).

Closed since 1992 and not open to the public; the buildings are unsafe. It can be seen from a distance from public ground on Centennial Boulevard.

The cellblock was a set, built and filmed on a soundstage here; Terence Marsh designed the interiors.

A visitor to the set counted twenty-four mice playing Mr. Jingles, handled by Boone Narr; some of the mouse’s moves were done by computer.

Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks took the lot over in 1919. Warner Bros. bought it in 1980 and sold it in 1999, the year the film came out, when it was renamed The Lot.

Wuthering Heights, Some Like It Hot and West Side Story were made here; HBO now leases all seven stages.

Six parts, one a month.

King first published the novel as six thin Signet paperbacks, one at the end of each month from March to August 1996; it won the Bram Stoker Award for best novel that year. Darabont adapted it in under eight weeks.
