A field near St James’s Church, Shere

Rosehill Cottage (a set)

Iris’s cottage was never a house. The production built its shell in a field on the hillside near St James’s Church and shot every outside scene there.

Production designer Jon Hutman places it just up the hill from St James’s Church and down the road from the White Horse.

Location manager Benjamin Greenacre describes it starting as a field, four wooden pegs and a cross bar: the cottage was standing within days, and four more weeks went on a garden meant to look 200 years old.

A real cottage was found first, but it was too far from London, where the crew was based.

There is no cottage to find: only its front was ever built, in a field near the church, and no exact spot is published. Keep to the lanes. The photograph is Church Hill, looking down to the church, not the field.

St James’s Church

The cottage’s outside was built in a field next to the church.

The church was built around 1190 on the site of a Saxon church recorded in the Domesday survey of 1086.

An anchoress’s cell was once attached to its north wall, with a squint window into the church.

It is Grade II listed. The Independent and Country & Town House date it to 1425; the pub’s own page says 1475.

The Tillingbourne in Shere

Amanda runs across a footbridge over the Tillingbourne.

Meyers chose Shere partly because it is about an hour from London, where the cast and crew were based.

The stream runs through the village centre, crossed by a ford and wooden footbridges on public lanes.

The outside of Amanda and Graham’s country lunch, and the drive-and-walk montage around it, were filmed at Cornwell Manor.

Meyers says in her DVD commentary that the montage was a nod to the 1966 French film A Man and a Woman.

The house sits on a 2,000-acre estate on the Oxfordshire–Gloucestershire border.

The film sets Amanda’s house in Brentwood, but its gate and outside were filmed at a house in San Marino, next to Pasadena.

The architect Wallace Neff built the house for his own family in 1928.

LA Mag puts it about 30 miles east of the house that played Arthur’s, so the two neighbours were never neighbours.

Arthur’s house was the Brentwood home of the comedian Phyllis Diller, who bought it in 1965 and lived there until 2012.
