Down the stairs.

  1. Midge first takes the Gaslight’s stage in season one, episode two, the night she leaves home after learning of Joel’s affair.
  2. The real Gaslight Cafe opened at 116 MacDougal Street in 1958, run by John Mitchell, and closed in 1971.
  3. Its front, now a bar called the Up & Up, was used for the outside. The inside was built as a set.
  4. It began as a basket house: performers were not paid, and passed a basket round after each set.
  5. Its windows opened onto air shafts. Applause bothered the neighbours, who called the police, so audiences snapped their fingers instead.

The Up & Up, a cocktail bar, is in the space now. The club’s inside was a set, so the room you walk into is not the one on screen.

When Midge speaks at a protest against a road through Washington Square, she is standing in a real fight. Robert Moses had planned to run Fifth Avenue on through the park, and the Village spent seven years stopping him. Sign the petition, one name at a time, and take the road out.
