Pond scum.

Belfort’s first job on Wall Street is the bottom rung. He climbs from the kerb outside the Stock Exchange to a broker’s desk on Broadway, with a lunch on the way forty-one floors above Fifth Avenue.

Scorsese directed the shot of Belfort stepping off a blue-and-white city bus with a “Wall Street” banner.

The exchange fills most of the block between Wall Street, Broad Street, New Street and Exchange Place. Its main building, at 18 Broad Street, was designed by George B. Post.

    The Equitable Building

The film puts L.F. Rothschild, Belfort’s first firm, in the Equitable Building. He starts as a licensed broker here just in time for Black Monday in 1987.

The firm’s real address was 666 Fifth Avenue.

Finished in 1915, it was the largest office building in the world by floor area. It has no setbacks, and its bulk helped bring in the city’s first zoning law in 1916.

Sell me this pen.

The line was not in the script. DiCaprio’s bodyguard, a New York detective, had once been handed a pen in a job interview with the real Belfort and told to sell it; DiCaprio sprang it on the other actors. Scorsese liked it so much he ended the film on it. Talk up the pen and nobody buys. Make the buyer need it, and every sale writes the next place of the rise.
